What to expect: Built in 1912, this early Art Deco hotel occupies an entire block of The Strand. Informal and busy, the Strand Palace is a magnet for vacationers and business travelers in search of a reasonably priced, central location. Casually-clad guests stream in and out of the bright, marble-walled lobby furnished with potted palms and leather sofas.

Amenity highlights: The Strand Palace has its own arcade of shops, including a jeweler, a goldsmith, and a souvenir shop. In the center of the arcade is Diva Café, with windows looking out on the Strand.

Insider tip: Two blocks from the hotel, on the north bank of the River Thames, is Somerset House with its many art galleries and smart restaurant - and an ice rink in winter. Cinnamon-colored leather seats and banquettes, bright acrylic paintings, and large potted palms make for a relaxed atmosphere. Open daily for a buffet breakfast. Also offers a grill menu, traditional carvery and salad bar for lunch and dinner. Capacity 100.

Biancone - An informal, Italian-style taverna with terracotta floor tiles, white stucco walls, and brick arches. Alcove seating is available in the main dining room, while leather seats in the bar area offer views of a big-screen TV. Serves both English and Continental breakfasts, plus a selection of antipasti, pasta, pizza, and traditional Italian dishes for lunch and dinner. Capacity 50.

Johnston's Brasserie - A split-level bar-restaurant, with gilt-framed mirrors and potted palms set against cream-colored walls. The raised dining area has tartan-upholstered chairs and stripped wood floors, while the lower bar-lounge features red-and-black tiled flooring, bistro tables, and armchairs. Sandwiches, burgers, and pasta are served, and a fixed-price dinner menu offers modern European cuisine. The Continental buffet breakfast is served here. Capacity 100.

The Mask Bar - Serving cocktails from early evening until the early hours, the air-conditioned Mask Bar attracts the business crowd and features teak paneling, bistro tables, and diamond-patterned banquettes surround the black granite wave-shaped bar. Capacity 50 seated. Open 5pm-2am.

Diva Café - Serving a variety of coffees, pastries, sandwiches, muffins, milkshakes, ice creams, and juices, Diva is situated in the hotel's shopping arcade, and has large windows fronting the Strand. Open during office hours. Capacity 25.

Hops! Bar - Popular with hotel guests and locals, this upbeat sports TV bar has a lively atmosphere, a substantial pub menu and a range of wines, beers, and spirits. Open from lunchtime until late evening. Capacity 60 seated.
